The drying process is based on selective permeation through a membrane module. Inside the dryer, bundles of hollow membrane fibres allow water vapour molecules to permeate through the fibre walls while the remaining compressed air continues to the outlet. A small portion of dry purge air flows along the outside of the fibres, carrying the moisture away and exhausting it safely to the atmosphere.
This continuous process ensures quiet and reliable operation without moving parts, making the FMD membrane dryer an extremely dependable solution for compressed air systems. Because the system does not require electricity, refrigerants or complex regeneration cycles, it offers low installation costs, simple operation and environmentally friendly performance.

For optimal air quality, the dryer should be installed with a Grade 10 prefilter and Grade 6 coalescing filter upstream. When properly configured, these filtration stages can provide up to 99.9985% removal of oil aerosols and mist, based on a typical 40 ppm oil inlet concentration, ensuring that the compressed air entering the membrane module is clean and suitable for drying.
Optional desiccant materials are also available for specialised drying requirements, including silica gel and molecular sieve media. Silica gel offers high moisture adsorption capacity with dew points down to -40°F, while molecular sieve desiccants provide enhanced performance at elevated inlet temperatures with excellent water vapour adsorption characteristics.
