In industrialised countries, around 10% of total industrial electricity consumption is used for compressed air generation, while in Germany the figure is as high as 14%. Leakages are the main factor for energy losses, with most compressed air systems showing losses of about 20% to 40%, and poorly maintained systems exceeding 60%. Fixing compressed air leaks is the most effective action for reducing energy consumption, making systematic leak detection essential for energy efficiency and cost control.
The LD 500 / LD 510 Ultrasound Camera enables users to find compressed air leaks much faster than traditional leak detectors and makes the entire process more intuitive and easier. The camera uses 30 digital MEMS microphones, an FPGA, and a processor for calculating the ultrasound map. The underlying beam forming algorithm bundles the ultrasonic signals and allows the device to automatically display the overlaid image on the screen, showing the exact leak location in real time.
Leak detection is a recurring marathon rather than a single sprint. With a light weight of only 600 grams and a long battery life of up to 7 hours, the LD 500 / LD 510 is designed for all-day leak detection audits. The included holster supports the user by eliminating the need to carry the device constantly and provides an additional free hand when required, improving ergonomics and productivity during extended inspections.
To actually reduce energy consumption, leaks must not only be detected but also repaired. For effective prioritisation and maintenance planning, the LD camera allows critical information to be stored directly at the leak location, including:
Where the leak is located
What needs to be done to fix it
Estimated costs of each leak
An image of the leak showing the leaking element
The data generated during audits with sometimes several hundred leaks can be managed locally or online using the Leak Reporter Software. With just a few clicks, automatic leakage reports (PDF, CSV) can be generated, containing all relevant leak information and a cover sheet with a general overview, making the LD 500 / LD 510 an effective tool for maintenance planning, energy audits, and documentation.
